One of the things we noticed when we bought Yanula Blue was unused space! We wanted to ensure we had every inch of her utilised so set about changing and adding the following:
Headboard:

Our friends Joan and Mike Shepphard had told us how they used the transom for extra storage – and we discovered the bed was 2.2 metres long so thought we could shorten it 20cm and make extra storage space and a nicer headboard.
Saloon Cupboards:

There were voids between the cupboards in the saloon that we wanted to utilise, plus the dining table had a cupboard where it would be better as drawers (Joan and Mike had also done this!).
Lithium Battery Storage:

Most importantly though we needed a space for the eight new Lithium batteries Chris wanted to install in order to be self sufficient. Previously they were under the bed and that space just wouldn’t fit the new bank, so the best place was under the existing vanity unit in the bedroom.
Port Side Shelf:

In the aft master cabin, on the port side above a top loading cupboard there was a void. Jenni saw how this could be a shelf for more storage, if the hinged lid could concertina.
This would all be skilled work we knew, as joinery on a boat is very different to in a house as nothing is even and everything has funny angles and distances. We had a couple of quotes that were eye watering, or contractors just weren’t interested as it was too difficult, and then we were told that Nick Harris at our Yacht Club did boat joinery so we chatted to him – he agreed to the work and we set about it.
There was only a rough quote and we trusted Nick to do a good job at a fair price – and that he did!
His work is meticulous and he was constantly on and off Yanula Blue measuring and tweaking.

He was also full of great ideas and came up with the concept of the ‘wedding cake’ underneath the vanity unity, where a space between the existing unit and the battery box could be used. This became Jenni’s shoe storage – perfect for a size 5 shoe!!!
Nick is also such a lovely chap with a constant smile on his face, we can’t thank (or recommend!) him enough.
Here are a selection of photos of the finished work – which is all amazing!
